Since we’re celebrating Edgar Allan Poe and the 165th anniversary of The Raven, I dug out this yard sale find “Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe” to show you some of the plates. No printing date, but a handwritten note  in the front is dated 1927!  The copy I have was published by JJ Little & Ives. The Raven is not included in this book, but the amazing illustrations by Irish born Harry Clarke are fascinating. He was the original goth artist influence by the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Nothing compares. For more images and info, check out at Grandma’sGraphics.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.

……………..

For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door –
Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as `Nevermore.’

“The Raven”  by Edgar Allen Poe

Today marks the 165th anniversary of the first publishing of  Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven“. In case you don’t want to do the math, the year was 1845. Poe’s poem has influenced the work of artists and crafters worldwide and the  image of the massive black bird can be found on everything from canvas to clothes, and pottery to pendants.  Here are three favorite raven items currently for sale on etsy (and one pendant I made myself)- posted today as a tribute to Poe’s famous work.
